History of the Penn Roosevelt Camp & Lodge
Built from the efforts of the Civilian Conservation Corporation in 1933, the Penn Roosevelt Camp was purchased by Mifflin County 4-H in 1966. Sitting adjacent to Penn Roosevelt State Park and Mid-State Trail, Penn Roosevelt has served as a weekend retreat for many youth serving organizations. Over time, deterioration and vandalism has brought renovations and modernization to the facility. By participating in the community Day of Caring event in 2009, Penn Roosevelt was able to establish a working relationship with the employees of GE-Lewistown. Over the past decade, GE has helped with major renovations. With the closing of GE, a new relationship has now been formed with First Quality of Lewistown for the event. Fundraising efforts through the Centennial Celebration and Annual Giving Campaign, the original mess hall has been demolished and a new lodge built in 2014. The facility now consists of a main lodge with full kitchen, two handicap accessible bathrooms and finished loft, two additional bunkhouses and pavilion. The future plans include a new bathhouse. The changes are impressive!
